A Little Something on Birthdays

I often hear people say how they wished they could be a child again for some days, re-experience the little wonders of the world. Personally, I am glad I'm a grown-up. I had a good childhood, it had its ups and downs but I wouldn't want to go back and there's not much I miss. Not really.

Well, after the last few days I have to admit there's one thing, though. Birthdays.
The huge parties with balloons, cake, decoration, games, presents in colourful wrapping paper... I still love colourful wrapping paper (I love to give people presents for all sorts of occasions just so I can wrap somethng in colourful paper!)
Things are different now. Obviously.
True, there are more people wishing you a happy birthday - colleagues from university, work, people you haven't met with in ages who get reminded by the facebook-calendar or similar programmes... but even though it might be a nice gesture, if you know me a bit you might figure I'm not a fan or politeness just for the sake of it.
Usually a week before your birthday your relatives ask the usual "what do you want for your birthday?"-question... even your parents... then either you tell them or you don't know what to say and in the end they give you money. Sometimes even your friends ask you what they should give you, sometimes they just pay you a drink or two, sometimes they get you something nice but present it to you with the words "I'm sorry, didn't have time to wrap it"...
And you know - that's all good and fine! It really is and you're still happy about the attention and the nice words and that you get together with friends and relatives... but it's just not how it used to be. And sometimes I feel sad about that.

So, after all these melancholy thoughts I have to say one thing: My birthday last Thursday was AWESOME!
Of course we didn't go back in time and it wasn't even our intention to re-live childhood birthday parties but I think in terms of being grown-ups that birthday party came about as close as possible. After work I met up with my closest friends (and, yes, the most important ones, who actually live in the country, were there) and we stuffed our stomachs with Running Sushi. After that we continued to have some drinks at a Karaoke Bar - which felt a bit boring at first but as the night progressed and the awful singing began (not to mention the alcohol kicked in) things got really relaxed and fun.
So yeah, when we dizzily left at 4am I felt it was safe to say that this was the best birthday in years.
